Tipper truck gross vehicle weight: what 51 tonnes means in practice

What does gross vehicle weight mean for a tipper truck?

Gross vehicle weight (GVW) is the total the truck is rated to weigh on the road: the empty truck, the driver, fuel and the load in the body, all added together. It is a ceiling for the whole vehicle, not a statement of how much material the body can carry.

That is why a tipper rated at 51 tonnes GVW does not carry 51 tonnes of earth. The payload is what is left after the truck's own weight is taken off, and that figure depends on the exact truck, its body and its axle layout. Always ask for the payload of the specific truck you are booking, and plan your loads and trip counts around that number, not the headline GVW.

Vanguard Transport's tipper trucks go up to 51 tonnes gross vehicle weight. See the tipper truck service and the fleet page for what we run.

How does LTA classify a truck this heavy?

LTA's OneMotoring site sorts goods vehicles by maximum laden weight (MLW). Its goods vehicle classification lists four types:

Vehicle typeMLW range (LTA)
Light goods vehicle (LGV)up to 3,500 kg
Heavy goods vehicle (HGV)3,501 to 16,000 kg
Goods-cum-passengers vehicle (GPV)up to 5,000 kg
Very heavy goods vehicle (VHGV)above 16,000 kg

A tipper rated at 51 tonnes (51,000 kg) is far above the 16,000 kg line, so in LTA's scheme it belongs in the very heavy goods vehicle class. LTA assigns the official figure at registration, so check the vehicle's registration documents rather than relying on a brochure number.

What rules apply to very heavy goods vehicles?

LTA's commercial vehicles page sets out several rules that bear on heavy tipper work. Read the page itself for the full conditions; in summary:

  • Parking: to park a heavy goods vehicle with MLW over 5,000 kg, a valid Vehicle Parking Certificate (VPC) is needed.
  • Blind-spot equipment: heavy and very heavy goods vehicles with MLW over 12,000 kg registered from 1 April 2015 must carry mirrors or devices covering the blind-spot areas.
  • Restricted roads: goods vehicles generally need LTA authorisation to enter roads marked with a lorry restriction sign, and weight limit plates can change who must apply. Our guide to lorry-restricted roads explains the check.
  • Overweight movements: a permit is needed when overall weight exceeds the vehicle type's laden weight limits. LTA says to apply through its LTA.PROMPT portal at least 3 days ahead, and an auxiliary police escort is required at an overall weight of 80,000 kg or more.

These are LTA's requirements, which can change. Confirm the current position with LTA before planning a heavy or unusual movement.

What should a site manager check before a 51-tonne truck arrives?

The truck's rating is only half the question. The site has to be able to take it.

  1. Gate and haul road. Check width, turning space and surface for a fully loaded heavy vehicle, and keep the route clear of parked plant and materials.
  2. Ground at the tipping point. A tipper raises its body to unload, so the ground should be firm and level where it tips. Soft or sloping ground is a risk for any heavy vehicle.
  3. Who controls loading. Agree who loads, who checks the load and who signs off, so no truck leaves over its rating.
  4. Traffic management. Separate walkways from truck routes and brief drivers on site hazards before they start.
  5. Driver licence. Heavy tippers need the right licence class: see our guide to the Class 4 licence.

Vanguard Transport supplies the truck and a Vanguard driver as one service for the length of a long-term contract, and drivers are briefed on site-specific hazards before mobilising. To discuss a project, contact us.

Does a higher GVW mean a better truck for your site?

Not automatically. A higher rating suits long hauls of bulk material on good roads and wide gates. Tight sites, soft ground or restricted roads may suit a lighter truck better. Our guide on cement mixer truck vs tipper truck covers how to choose by site conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is 51 tonnes the amount a tipper truck can carry?

No. Gross vehicle weight includes the truck's own weight, the driver, fuel and the load. The payload is what remains, and it varies by truck. Ask for the payload of the specific vehicle.

What class of vehicle is a 51-tonne tipper under LTA?

LTA defines a very heavy goods vehicle as one with a maximum laden weight above 16,000 kg, so a 51-tonne tipper falls in that class. The official figure is set at registration.

Do heavy tipper trucks need a permit to travel on Singapore roads?

Not for every trip. LTA requires a permit when overall weight exceeds the vehicle type's laden weight limits, and an escort at 80,000 kg or more. Check the current rules on LTA's commercial vehicles page.

Does Vanguard Transport rent out tipper trucks for self-drive?

No. We supply a truck and a Vanguard driver together, allocated to your project for the length of a long-term contract.
